The Great Snow of 1950

This was the great snow of 1950. As I recall it was beautiful fall weather right up until the blizzard struck. It hit on a Holiday, anyone remember which one? School was out for a week and I don't think traffic came into or out of Spencer for that entire week. I remember Eleanor Grudier talked about being stranded on their farm in Billings for the week and rejoicing when they saw a Greyhound bus plowing through from Parkersburg.

The original snow was about three feet more or less, but then there was a lot of wind and the snow drifted very deep. I remember we could make tunnels through the drifts. It was great fun for the kids, but I imagine our parents were pretty concerned. The electricity was out for most of the week for most folks, and I think the stores were running low on food, etc.

First picture here: From west end of Spencer Cemetery looking toward Parkersburg. In the distance Jim and Fanny Mack's house, and on the hill, the large house where my grandparents lived then. This was obviously some time after the initial snow as road is open.

Next picture: 180 degrees from first. Drifts as high as the car. Men are Russ Payne and Okey Harris.

Last picture: This was home of Dick and Opal Johnson at the top of Oak Drive. Not exactly Minneysoder, but pretty snowed-in.
